The Federal Government expressed profound pain in the passage of his holiness Pope Francis.

The Pope died on Monday 21 April 2025, at the age of 88.

The condolences of the government were contained in a declaration issued by the spokesperson for the acting of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Ebienfa.

The Holy Father’s Holy Father, the political leader of the Vatican city and the head of the Catholic Church, was described in the declaration as a global moral leader whose papacy was marked by humility, compassion and by an unwavering commitment for peace, social justice and the dignity of all people.

The declaration stated: “Nigeria commensurate with the team population of the Catholic Church in the country and joins the international community, in particular the Catholic faithful all over the world, in mourning for the loss of immense. The profound concern of Pope Francis for the marginalized and marginals were the poor of benefits.

“His historical excuses of 2022 for the role of the Church in colonial injustices, including the suffering of indigenous populations, made a powerful example of reconciliation. Even worthy of commendation is his defense for peace in Africa and other areas of conflict in the world, which reflect his universal pastoral mission.”

The statement also said that: “In this moment of pain, therefore, Nigeria extends the heartfelt condolences to the Vatican, the Catholic Church and the Argentine people, who gave the world this extraordinary Pontiff.

“We pray for the rest of his soul and trust that his inheritance of mercy, dialogues and care of our common home will last.”
