Pope Leo voiced concern over the expanding Iran conflict and called for an immediate ceasefire

Delivering his message during the Angelus prayer in St. Peter’s Square on Sunday, the Catholic Church leader described the reports coming in from Iran and the surrounding region as disturbing. His remarks came as the confrontation reached its ninth day following attacks by the United States and Israel on Iranian sites.

“Alongside the violence and destruction, there are growing concerns that the conflict could spread and other countries, including Lebanon, could sink again into instability,” Pope Leo said, according to Reuters.

The pope called for an immediate end to hostilities and called on global leaders to pursue diplomacy rather than further military action.

“Let us offer our humble prayers to God so that the roar of bombs stops, weapons can no longer be silenced, and space is opened for dialogue where people’s voices can be heard,” he added.

The Pope’s warning comes as international anxiety continues to rise over the military campaign carried out by the United States and Israel. Earlier this week, the Vatican’s chief diplomat also condemned the attack, warning that the military action undermined international law and insisting that no country had the authority to start a “preventive war.”
