Princess Openyemi Bright has sworn as the youngest mayor in the United Kingdom.
At just 29 years old, he now holds the estimate of the first town in the London district of Barking and Dagenham.
The historic inauguration took place on May 16, 2025, marking a new chapter of British politics and Nigerian global leadership. Born in the United Kingdom by Nigerian parents, the rise of Princess Bright is not only a personal milestone, but also a reflection of the growing influence of the Nigerians abroad.
“This is to say the least the grace of God,” he said during his inauguration. “I am proud to serve my neighborhood and, as a proud Nigerian, I will represent my inheritance with humility and excellence. This journey may inspire others to guide, serve and climb.”
Bright’s political journey started soon. Elected councilor at the age of 22, he spent the last seven years to defend the youth empowerment, social inclusion and economic opportunities within his neighborhood. His dedication to the service is rooted in his education. She is the daughter of Dr. Councilor Afolasade Bright, who was the Civic Mayor of Hackney from 2006 to 2007, and the shepherd Gbolahan Bright Mbe, a senior minister of the RedEnto Christian Church of God (RCCG).
