The faction in the Rivers State House of Assembly loyal to Governor Siminalaye Fubara has rejected a move by a rival group to stop the governor from spending state revenues.
A faction in the Assembly led by Martins Amaewhule on Monday passed a resolution stopping the governor from incurring further expenditure from the 2024 budget.
Lawmakers loyal to Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike have said the seven-day ultimatum given to governors to present the 2024 budget has expired.
The Court of Appeal on July 4 reinstated Amaewhule and 25 other lawmakers who left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC) in October last year as members of the Assembly.
However, the leader of the pro-Fubara group, Mr. Victor Oko-Jumbo, in a House of Assembly session on Tuesday in Port Harcourt described the move as illegal.
Oko-Jumbo said the 2024 state budget had been duly tabled and passed into law under the leadership of then speaker Edison Ehie.
He said Amaewhule and 24 others resigned from the House of Representatives after leaving the PDP and moving to the APC.
He appealed to the people of the state to ignore any action taken by the Amaewhule-led faction, saying they were no longer members of parliament.
“Their seats have long been declared vacant, this statement is in accordance with the provisions of the constitution.
“We urge the KPU to immediately take action in holding by-elections to fill vacant positions,” said the DPR member.
