Prof. Joash Ojo Amutan (San) emerged as the probable candidate to succeed Prof. Mahmood Yakubu as national president of the independent national electoral commission (Iner).
On Monday, a Saharareporter report said that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had ordered Yakubu to proceed on leave before the expiry of his mandate.
The report cited privileged sources for having described the move as an answer to what they called the “last minute betrayal” of Yakubu of the Government All Progressives Congress (APC) who appointed it.
According to reports, the governor of the State of Imo Uzodimma met President Tinubu shortly after the president returned from a 12 -day work holiday, claiming that Yakubu efforts to record new political parties towards the end of his mandate had interrupted the preparations for Tinubu for a second term.
Sources, according to Saharareportters, said that the governor also said that Yakubu was secretly supporting a candidate for the elections of the governor of the state of the soul.
Following this briefing, according to Tinubu reported, he asked Yakubu to suspend all official tasks and to proceed on terminal leave.
The directive caused interruptions of the INCC, leading to the abrupt cancellation of the quarterly meeting of Yakubu with political parties, as well as a session planned with the organizations of civil society.
The president should present the name of a new Incen president at the National Assembly in the next few days, with sources that identify Prof. Amutan as a probable candidate.
Yakubu’s current five -year mandate will expire in the first week of December 2025, marking the conclusion of his ten -year service.
He was appointed Incen president on October 21, 2015 by the then president Muhammadu Buhari, succeeding the president of Interim Amina Zakari. After confirmation of the Senate on 29 October 2015, he swore on 9 November 2015.
After completing his first term in November 2020, Yakubu was appointed for a second and last mandate by President Buhari, confirmed by the Senate, and sworn on 1 December 2020.
“Tinubu is shopping for the replacement of Prof. Yakubu and Prof. Joash Ojo Amutan will probably be the next Incen president,” said a high -level government source in Saharareportters.
The message of hope of Tinubu to the Nigerians @ 65: yes, inflation is pungent, the cost of living is increasing; We will not allow our country to descend into economic chaos or bankruptcy
