Protest: Police arrest 212 suspected of looting, vandalism in Jigawa

Police officers in Jigawa have arrested 212 suspects in connection with looting, destruction and vandalism of property during the ongoing #EndBadGovernance protests in the state.

The state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Ahmadu Abdullahi, disclosed this on Saturday when he briefed journalists on the actions taken by the command to restore law and order in the state.

Abdullahi said that 72 of those arrested had been charged in court.

The police chief revealed that during the operation, officers confiscated evidence in the form of 303 sacks of fertilizer, 50 motorbikes, three pedicabs, 12 bicycles, nine chairs, 54 cartons of mosquito nets, two sacks of rice, and office equipment.

He recalled that a series of proactive measures had been taken by security agencies to prevent violence and protect lives and property ahead of the protests.

Abdullahi listed actions taken including surveillance, deployment of additional security personnel to potential hotspot locations, engagement with key stakeholders, and monitoring of social media platforms.

However, he regretted that some unpatriotic elements were trying to destabilize the country despite efforts by the command to prevent violence during the protests.
