PROTEST: Presidency accuses Peter Obi supporters of plotting chaos

The presidency, on Saturday, alleged that supporters of Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate, were planning nationwide protests aimed at destabilizing the country.

According to Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, the protesters are the same people who fueled the destructive ENDSARS protests in 2020 and are now using hashtags like “EndBadGovernance” and “Tinubu Must Go” to spread propaganda.

Onanuga claimed that the protesters were not democrats but anarchists who wanted to overthrow the elected government of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He warned that their actions could amount to high treason and urged security forces to interrogate the planners of the protests.

“Don’t be fooled: the rebels planning nationwide protests are supporters of Peter Obi, the failed presidential candidate of the Labour Party. And he must be held accountable for any crisis that arises from the action.

“The planners of the protest are also the same people who were incited by IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu to launch the destructive ENDSARS protests in Nigeria in October 2020. ENDSARS started as a genuine protest by youths against the notoriously high-handed Special Anti-Robbery Squad of the Police. IPOB members who planned to detach the South-East from Nigeria infiltrated the protest and hijacked it for their own agenda. Lagos still bears the scars of the destruction wrought by IPOB elements till date,” Onanuga claimed.

The presidency also highlighted the government’s efforts to address economic challenges, including raising the minimum wage, providing loans to students, and promoting consumer credit.

Onanuga advised Nigerians to consider the government’s efforts before joining the protests, which he believed were aimed at causing chaos.

He noted, “They are the ones spreading the hashtags ‘EndBadGovernment’, ‘Tinubu Must Go’ and ‘Revolution2024’. They are not democrats but anarchists. They are trying to call our people out through propaganda because their Savior, Peter Obi, failed to win the presidency in the 2023 general elections. As bad losers, they do not have the patience to wait for another general election in 2027; they would rather destabilize Nigeria by staging a civilian coup against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“If they understand the meaning of their hashtags, they will realize that they are a clarion call for treason. The desire to end an elected government is high treason. The desire for revolution is a call for a coup, which is also high treason.”

The developments come as tensions rise in the country, with some groups calling for protests against the government. The president’s accusations have sparked heated debate, with some supporting the government’s stance and others defending the right to peaceful protest.
