PRP scribe Bello calls for action on Bauchi-Jos road, says it is a ‘death trap’

Comrade Muhammed Bello, the acting National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), lamented the frequent accidents along the Bauchi-Jos road which have led to the loss of lives of commuters.

Bello who condemned the carnage on the road linking the North Central to the North Eastern regions of the country, called on governors in the region, lawmakers and other political leaders to give the road the attention it deserves.

Bello who made the call in a statement on Monday said:

“The Bauchi-Jos road, a vital arterial road linking the North Eastern region of Nigeria to the North-Central region, has become a death trap claiming lives every day.

“As leaders from the Northern region of Nigeria, especially governors and lawmakers from the North East region, it is imperative that they take this matter very seriously.

“Unfortunately, their actions seem to indicate otherwise, as the road, which is less than 150 kilometers long, has become a nightmare for motorists due to its dire condition.

“It is true that the leaders of the region have abandoned this route in favor of air travel, but it is also true that their absence has contributed significantly to the deterioration of the road.

“The Vice President who hails from the North East, governors, lawmakers and other top brass of the political class seem to turn a blind eye to the plight of their constituents who are forced to endure the dangerous conditions on these roads.

“The negative impact of this negligence is evident from the many deaths that occur every day on the highway. The death toll is shocking, with many lives lost due to avoidable accidents.

“The number of injured is incalculable, some with permanent injuries or disabilities. The economic impact is also significant, as business and trade suffer from disruptions caused by the poor condition of the roads.

“It is a paradox that the North East region, which has produced many prominent leaders since 1999, including two vice presidents, a senate president, a speaker of the house of representatives, a deputy speaker of the house of representatives, a secretary to the government of the federation, a chief of staff to the president and other top government officials, the Bauchi-Jos Road remains beset by mysterious problems.

“The Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA) has failed to adequately manage and maintain this important road.

“Rather than allocating trillions of Naira to construct new roads that are not really needed, such as the Lagos-Calabar coastal highway, it would be wise for the Federal Government to prioritize improving the condition of existing roads, which are claiming lives every day due to their deplorable state.

“The Bauchi-Jos road is a prime example of this neglect. It is imperative that the government takes concrete steps to make this road safe and motorable for all users.

“The Bauchi-Jos road is not just another road; it is a lifeline for millions of people who depend on it for their daily livelihoods. It is time for our leaders to take concrete steps to address this issue and ensure that this road is safe and motorable.

“The government’s indifference has led to untold suffering and loss of life, and it is vital that we demand accountability and effective action from our leaders.

“It is imperative that state leaders take immediate action to address this crisis. They must work with relevant agencies to ensure that the Bauchi-Jos Road is widened, rehabilitated and regularly maintained. Anything less is unacceptable, especially considering the enormous human cost of inaction.”
