The Nigerian University Registrar Association (Arnu) has raised concerns over the exception of the constant University of Nigeria from the top global ranking, quoting various challenges to undermine the country’s higher education sector.
Speaking at the third registrant workshop and the 77th business meeting held at Kaduna State University (KASU) on Wednesday, the Chairperson of the Association, Dr. Bala Ahmed, acknowledged that while Nigerian universities were filled with potential, they continued to lag behind their global colleagues in competitiveness, innovation, and international visibility.
This event, with the theme “University Ranking in Facing Global Competitiveness: Future Way for Nigeria University,” Uniting University Administrators to Overcome Systemic Problems that Affect this Sector.
Ahmed deplored that universities in Nigeria were wrestling with chronic underfunding, outdated infrastructure, low research outputs, and lack of international collaboration. “There is a disturbing exodus from our top academic talent and a decrease in the quality of stable student intake, as evidenced in the results of this new -new jamb,” he said.
He further associating a bad global academic position in the country with disruption in the academic calendar due to industrial actions, as well as inadequate institutional partnerships and limited adoption of technology that arises such as artificial intelligence (AI).

He stressed the need for Nigerian institutions to embrace AI, which has been globally integrated into research, learning, and innovation. Musa noted that Kasu had distinguished himself from the pioneering program in the procurement and management of supply chains, Islamic economics, and logistics – academic fields designed to overcome urgent national problems such as poverty, insecurity, and economic sustainability.
