Remembering Orto Douglas, by Dr. Tonye Clinton Jaja

● Rivers State like the place where the milk vultures, when the vultures surround you, tries not to die (exceed)

Oronto Douglas died on April 9, 2015.

Yesterday was the tenth anniversary of his death !!!

I had the privilege of meeting him during my days as a jurisprudence student at the Rivers State University.

In 2002, as a fourth year jurisprudence student, I selected the environmental law as an elective course.

I spent a lot of time at the Environmental Library of the Action for Environmental Rights (Era) which was in the area D/Line of Port Harcourt, in the state of sparrows.

It was during those visits to the library that I kept discussions with Oroofto Douglas (then head of the era) and others such as the late Patrick Nagbanton.

These discussions inspired me to write the environmental law as in the center of my master’s degree thesis.

During my doctoral thesis, the 2003 book of the ORONTO DOUGLAS 2003 was an invaluable reference material.

The title of the book is: “where it is fighting: shell, human rights and oil in the Niger delta”.

Was co-author from:
“Ike Okonta and Orto Douglas”, in the aforementioned book, both authors “present a devastating case against the largest oil company in the world, demonstrating how irresponsible practices have degraded to the public profile of Shell) degraded the agricultural land: the people of which the people have made themselves. Established to extract the last drop of blood from the Niger delta richly equipped and a courageous people and a courageous people determined to resist. “

Even if he didn’t live to see him, Shell has now left Niger’s Delta forever forever.

And the previous impunity and abandonment of previous governments of Nigeria against the Niger delta region have at least decreased !!!

Instead of the governments of Conchiglia and oppressive, another monster arose in the form of the quartet of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu (Pbat), Nyesom Ezenwo Wike (new), a group of flexible members of the judiciary and the current leadership of the National Assembly.

Starting from the sentence of the Supreme Court of 28 February 2025 to the unconstitutional declaration of a state of emergency in the rivers, this quartet has shown that nothing, no legal or constitutional impediment can hinder illegal political ambitions to capture and control both the revenues and the political capital that belong and emanate from the state of the rivers.

Just like the Roman emperors of the historical times, they have appointed a console/prosecutor who holds the unconstitutional title of the sole director, a title that is not mentioned in accordance with section 305 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 on the basis of which they claimed to derive the powers to impose the said state of emergency in the state of sparrows.

If Oronto Douglas was alive, he would have had a broken heart to look that one of the arrow heads of this illegal aggregation is a former partner named Professor Ibibia Worika, recently appointed secretary of the unconstitutional government of the said the only administrator of the State of the rivers.

It will be heartbreaking for orofing Douglas considering that Prof. Ibibia Worika was one of the intellectual heavyweight in the struggle for environmental justice for the Niger delta region.

The doctoral study of Prof. Ibibia Worika at the University of Aberdeen and the book based on this is named: “Environmental law and oil development policy: strategies and mechanisms for sustainable management in Africa” and was published by the center of Anpez for the environment and development in 2002.

There is no use of crying for poured milk.

There is a popular saying: “When the vultures surround you, try not to die”.

The proverb above is suitable is suitable and is a request for resilience in the face of great probability.

The Niger delta region has shown resilience and survived the combined assault of both Nigerian and Shell and subsequent governments !!!

There is no doubt that the governor Fubara and others who support the rule of law would have survived this current assault against the state of sparrows and the quartet and the only unconstitutional administrator !!!

Let’s overcome!
