The House of Representatives have begun an investigation of the implementation of the compressed natural gas policy of the Federal Government (CNG).
In his remarks at the opening of the investigation session on Thursday in Abuja, the speaker of the DPR, Tajudeen Abbas, said the policy was a key component of the country’s energy transition initiative.
The speaker, represented by the trial by a member of parliament from the state of Katsina, Sada Soli, said the policy was a strategic change towards a cleaner, safer, and more economical alternative for conventional fossil fuels, especially in the transportation sector.

He added that the policy was a response to the elimination of fuel subsidies as a palliative and long -term solution to eliminate the effects of high gasoline prices.
According to Abbas, the policy is expected to reduce transportation costs, improve air quality, and stimulate industrial development in all gas value chains.
He, however, noted that concerns have been raised at the rate of implementation, infrastructure readiness, safety standards, and sustainability framework for initiatives.
The speaker said: “Our concern is not only about policy intentions, but the mechanism of implementation.
“Is the funds adjusted to what is wisely used? Does the Nigerians feel the impact?
“Are the safety and environmental standards upheld? Are the stakeholders carried out adequately?
“Therefore, this session is a platform to hear directly from relevant government institutions, operators, industrial experts and the people of Nigeria itself.
“This is also an opportunity for constructive accountability and dialogue on how to ensure the success of the launch of the CNG policy for the benefit of national development.”
Previously, the Chairperson of the DPR’s Ad Hoc Committee on the implementation of CNG policy, Usman Jaha, said the policy risked failure without urgent transparency and stronger supervision.
Jaha asked questions about accessibility, sustainability, and justice of the launch of CNG in this country.
