Former Nigeria international defender Emeka Ezeugo says Austine Eguavoen should resign from his position as technical director of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) if he wants to remain the head coach of the senior national team, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.
Eguavoen was given a two-game mandate to lead the team in the AFCON qualifiers against Benin Republic and Rwanda respectively, and after a 3-0 draw and another 0-0 draw, he confirmed the expiration of his tenure with the team.
However, a few hours later, he retracted his statement in a rather bizarre manner, claiming that he had been quoted out of context and insisting that he is still the coach of the Super Eagles and also the technical director of the NFF.
Ezeugo, who was his teammate at the Super Eagles from 1991 to 1994, says it is high time the NFF asked the coach to decide on which job he wants to retain because he cannot continue to resort to the role of technical director whenever he pleases.
“Isn’t it funny that Eguavoen, who was eliminated in the round of 16 at the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations, remained in his role as manager? He is now the interim coach again and also the technical director, so if he fails as a coach, he will return to his role as manager. What do you think?” Ezeugo said.
“The NFF should be honest and tell him what role he prefers. It is not like he has a lifetime contract as the technical director or the interim coach of the Super Eagles forever when there is a vacuum. I am disappointed by his latest statement which contradicts his previous statement, all within a space of two hours. He should pick a role and stick with it.”
