Ruben Amorim had lowered the bar, as he often tried to do during his tumultuous four months at Manchester United. “We just have to survive,” said the coach’s head while evaluating what was the device not to be missed by the English calendar, wary of a selection crisis that deprived him of 11 players.

The United did more and were so close to cutting the darkness to Old Trafford, all the problems at several levels, with a late victory. “Well, at least we have Bruno”, read the cover of the United We Stand Fanzine who was on sale outside the stadium. Never a truest phrase.

Bruno Fernandes had put United in front of the end of a boring first half from a free kick and after Declan Rice had drew for a team from Arsenal who flattered to deceive, it was the United captain who almost affected in the end.

The United had turned the screw, launching the chains late and when Alejandro Garnacho and Noussair Mazraoui combined on the right, bringing the ball to the box, there were Fernandes. His shot was halfway from David Raya and yet the ball has risen and bounced towards the goal. Raya, guilty for the granting of the Arsenal, returned to the claw safe. It was dramatic stuff and not his first important rescue.

It was the 200rd game of Mikel Arte’s Premier League and yet it was not to be remembered for him. The challenge of the Arsenal title has long been over – their attention is more in the Champions League – and they have not done enough to punish a united team that has scored so much in recent times.

The opportunity was framed by the pre-match protest against the Glazer family, against the exhaust, decay and absenteeism of their property. There were a few thousand united irreducible who marched from the Tollgate Pub to the stadium, to Farces that illuminated the scene, a lot of frustration and anger. Will the Glazers receive the message that has been divided into such industrially? It is not a possibility.

Arsenal was supported by the extraordinary 7-1 victory in the Champions League at PSV Eindhoven last Tuesday. He triggered a series of consecutive score spaces for them and so, as someone said in Arte Friday, he made them 007. “Now boom,” said the manager, pretending to shoot a gun. The thrill was not there.

The United approach was colorful to caution at the beginning. They sank in a 5-4-1 and invited Arsenal. The containment was the plan; not leaving spaces between the lines. And if this meant making a few precious men advance when they contrasted, then so it is.

Arsenal bent the ball and tried to choose the lock, Martin Ødegaard buzzed from position no. 10. When he made an outbreak early in the box, the ball broke for Mikel Merino, who entered and made it explode just beyond the pole.

The first anti-Glazers song inside the stadium was listened to just before the kick-off and there were intermittent exhortations for the people who got up and show their opposition to them. There were many buyers. The first half wanders, defined by the irregular distribution of André Onana, by the excessively predictable game models of the United and also of a solid difendendi of the last line from them.

Arsenal worked in the last third, the missing passages, the times of too many escape. Leandro Trossard unleashed just after a nice passage by Gabriel Magalhães but was an isolated incision. And then United opened the game. It was a fist of suction cup, Garnacho who led inside to the right and is stumbled by Trossard out of the box, to the right of the center.

Did the defensive wall of the Arsenal seem behind and what about Raya’s positioning? It was strange to see him leave a great space for his left post, which was clearly where Fernandes would target. Although Raya dragged herself through when Fernandes took a step forward, she was still on the right of the center. Fernandes’ football was almost not in the corner. Raya flew through and was not close at all.

United has brought more intentions after the interval, more guide. Joshua Zirkzee, playing like n. 9 After Amorim dropped Rasmus Højlund, he finally got a waiting move to work, taking Via Diogo Dalot and Mazraoui met the cross with a flight. Raya saved brilliantly with her legs. The goalkeeper had to work again when Zirkzee launched a Garnacho cross deflected with his final leg. Raya’s reflexes were on this point.

Ødegaard approached shortly after the restart, Alba helped his journey on the crossbar, but when the Arsenal captain hit the wall from a free kick well positioned in 70 minutes, he was starting to seem desolant for his team. The feeling only harden when Ayden Heaven, turned on for the injured Lenny Yoro to face his old club, seemed to get away with a handball inside the area.

Take a step forward in the rice. It was a race and a cut to the right by Jurrien Timber and without the defender United, Received him, he bent a superb shot in the distant corner.

It was the prompt for a frenetic ending. Gabriel Martinelli, who returned as a substitute after an injury, worked Allana, who also overturned an Ødegaard late effort. But it was the United to seem the most favorable markers of the next goal. If only Højlund, who came for Zirkzee, had been faster when Casemiro played him; Rice has returned to a saving challenge. Dane was also denied by a robust Gabriel challenge. And then, in the end bitterness, there were Fernandes. Raya’s intervention was decisive.
