Rivers Assembly rejects Governor Fubara’s commissioner candidate

The Rivers State House of Assembly, on Monday, rejected four of the nine commissioner candidates submitted by Governor Siminalayi Fubara for screening and confirmation.

However, the DPR has approved five candidates for commissioners after going through a strict screening process that lasted more than two hours.

This was stated by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Martin Amaewhule, who chaired the plenary session on Monday in his summary after hearing the motion submitted and supported by his colleagues regarding the candidate.

Amaewhule said the four nominations were dropped due to poor performance during film screenings and controversies, including petitions surrounding their nominations.

“Respected colleagues, we have sent nine candidates to this DPR by the Governor. At the end of the screening process, the DPR has confirmed five of them.

“And of the four, the DPR chose to take a deep breath considering their poor performance and the controversy surrounding their documents.

“They have not been able to show this August assembly that they are ready to serve Rivers State or that they are capable.

“And we feel that they are not a peg for the position they want to occupy in the Rivers State Executive Council.

“On that note, esteemed colleagues, I thank you for your contribution. With your permission and in accordance with our rules, I will forward the resolution of this August session to the governor so that he can take the necessary steps in the interest of Rivers State,” he said.

After asking questions for the DPR to write a letter to the governor, the Speaker added:

“For this reason, I will forward a letter to the governor and ask him to swear in the five candidates as soon as possible.”

Those whose nominations were rejected include Prof Datonye Alasia, Tamuno Williams, Otonye Amachree and Charity Deemua.

Others approved by MPs are Tonye Belgam, Prof Temple Nwafor, Dr Peters Nwagor, Lekue Kenneth and Amarigha Edward-Hart.
