RYLA 2024 UPDATE: This is an opportunity for our youth to learn selfless service, Rotarian Olubunmi Ekundayo reveals the benefits of the camp

One of the main benefits that all participants will gain from the first Rotary Youth Leadership Academy (RYLA) organized by Rotary International District 9112 is the opportunity they have to learn to work selflessly.

Sports247.ng reports that the academy opened last Saturday at Sea School, which is located on an island off Liverpool Quay, Apapa, Lagos, and will close this Sunday.

Prior to its closure, the week-long camp has been described as a rallying point through which all participants, now known as RYLArians, will gain various benefits.

This was stated by the Coordinator of the Sea School, Dr. Olubunmi Ekundayo, who revealed that the 294 participants, who came from various different communities in Lagos, as well as Sagamu, Ijebu Ode and Arepo in Ogun State, will have amazing stories to take home.

Ekundayo, who is also a Rotarian, said in his welcome address to the attendees: β€œThis is an opportunity to learn the art of selfless service and take direct responsibility for the development of your community.

β€œFor us as Rotarians, our impact cannot end without giving them the opportunity to distinguish their right from their left.”

Rotarian Ekundayo then spoke about the tasks and strategies that all RYLA Camp staff will use until all participants leave at 3:00 pm this Sunday.

β€œIt is also our mandate to instill in them the ability to know what is good for their immediate self and their environment,” he explained.
β€œThey must imbibe the art of selfless service, community development and above all, the etiquette of leadership. This is what we promise to teach these RYLArians.
β€œWe will teach them with both artificial and man-made challenges, what we call obstacle crossing, and other adventure programs.

β€œThey will also participate in team building activities and a range of outdoor activities. All of this is designed to make their presence and training at Sea School noteworthy.”

He concluded by praising all the teenagers, youth and young adults for attending the program, which is the first organized by District RC 9112 after its recent inception.

Ekundayo praised: “I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the participants for allowing themselves to be trained. They will be trained and well instructed on the way things are done at the Sea School.

“We believe that they will be able to cope with the demands of this academy. But anything that remains a mystery to them must be communicated to one of the officials.

β€œTo our parents, siblings and friends in Rotary, we promise that the next time you meet these young RYLArians, you will be amazed at what they have accomplished here.”

The coordinator added that he was pleased to see how all the participants quickly adapted to their arrival and settled almost immediately into life on the island.

He also expressed his hope that everyone will excel in lectures, physical exercises, sports, social activities, cultural exhibitions and various forms of bonding while at the camp.
