Salihu Lukman, a former Deputy Chairperson of the National (northwestern) of the Congress of All Progressive (APC), has increased concerns about what he described as a worrying shift from the party from the progressive ideals of his establishment of autocracy, warning that internal democracy has collapsed.
Speaking to Brief Morning, the television program channel, on Friday, Lukman said the ruling party now operates more like a monarchy than a democratic institution. He expressed disappointment in what he called the culture of automatic support and setting aside the process of internal selection systematically.
“APC has moved from a party that is imagined to be progressive to almost a monarchy,” Lukman said. “Like now, the APC spell is that there will be no internal contests in 2027 – the president was adopted. All their governors were adopted. The legislator was also adopted.”
For Lukman, this indicates not only the betrayal of the principles of party establishment, but also a serious threat to democratic accountability.
“Every party whose elected representatives are not responsible are not parties in the classical sense,” he added.
Lukman also revealed that further negotiations are ongoing to form a new opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 general election. According to him, this movement has been under a calm development for more than a year, with efforts focused on building a credible platform that can challenge the status quo of political quo.

“Nobody stopped the coalition to produce results,” he said. “We are going through a tiring and immediately process, we will come out and clarify all the details in terms of how we will fight for the 2027 election and coalition leaders.”
Lukman noted that the coalition could restructure the existing political platforms or gave birth to new parties. He emphasized that the focus was not only on the arrest of power, but in redefining Nigeria’s political culture by institutionalizing real internal democracy, constitutional reform, and transparent candidate selection.
“We want to give a new reality to the Nigerians who discuss all frustrations,” he said. “We want to ensure that internally, the winners appear through the contest, and when people win the election, they are responsible to the party.”
Lukman’s comments emerged after the Progressive Governor Forum (PGF) officially supported the President of Bola Tinubu as the only candidate for the APC President for the 2027 election.
The Governor of the State of the IMO and the Chairperson of PGF, Hope Uzodimma, made an announcement during the Summit organized by APC. Senate President Godswill Akpabio also stated that Tinubu should not only be the only APC candidate, but also the nation’s sole choice for the presidency.
