A group of scientists has developed a robot that helps people with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and improves their executive function and memory.
A new robot called CARMEN (Cognitive Assistive Robot for Motivation and Neurorehabilitation) was created by researchers at the University of California San Diego in collaboration with doctors and MCI individuals.
Through interactive exercises and games, CARMEN focuses on teaching compensatory cognitive methods to improve memory and executive function.
Prof. Laurel Riek, who participated in the project, emphasized the team’s dedication to developing practical solutions that meet the needs of people with motor cortex injuries.
This robot is intended to be used autonomously by its intended user without constant monitoring.
Practical issues such as accessibility and dependability can be overcome with a plug-and-play design and low maintenance requirements, especially in locations with unstable internet access.
When CARMEN was first implemented in households, it asked participants to perform a variety of cognitive tasks to improve daily functioning.
These tasks include creating routine locations for required objects and managing calendars efficiently.
