SDP demands electoral reform, social justice

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Imo State on Tuesday, called for comprehensive reforms in the electoral process in the country ahead of the 2027 elections to ensure more credible results.

The SDP Chairman in the state, Henry Eluwa, made the call in a statement in Owerri to mark the celebration of the state’s 64th Independence Day.

He also called for social justice, fairness and good governance to address rural poverty, inequality and social exclusion.

Eluwa, who also advocates for economic aid, decried the high costs of fuel, transportation, electricity rates and food, especially rice and beans.

He called for strategic government intervention to make these items affordable to the average Nigerian.

The Chairman said: β€œWe call on all well-meaning Nigerians to join us in the pursuit of justice and reform.

β€œSDP faithful across Imo gathered solemnly to reflect on the daylight robbery that occurred during the September 21 local government elections in Imo.

β€œWe stand firm in our commitment to electoral reform, good governance and social justice.

β€œThe blatant disregard for the Imo State Independent Electoral Commission (ISIEC) election guidelines has left many people disenfranchised and disillusioned.”

He said ISIEC’s decision to issue return certificates to the chairman-elect on September 23 contrary to the stipulated dates of September 2 to September 4, was a clear violation of election guidelines.

β€œSDP demands that the court take swift and decisive action against ISIEC for blatantly ignoring its own guidelines.

β€œWe urge the courts to uphold the law and ensure that those responsible for violations are held accountable,” Eluwa said.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) won all 27 chairmanship positions and 305 assemblyman positions in elections boycotted by the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) in the state.
