The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has described June 12 as an important milestone in the history of Nigerian democracy, while lamenting that the country remains hindered by the failure of the rooted leadership and political betrayal.
In a statement that marked the 2024 Democracy Day, the Secretary of the National Publicity of the Party, Mr. Rufus Aiyenigba, said June 12, 1993, would forever stand as an important moment that re -forming the political landscape and national awareness of Nigeria.
“Today, Nigeria celebrates another national anniversary about the pride of places in our political history and unlawful signs made on June 12, 1993, in our national life, especially as a historical watershed and a symbol of our democracy, and form our collective efforts in national development,” said Aiyenigba.
SDP paid homage to the late Head of Moshood Kashimawo Abiola, widely considered a symbol of the rebirth of the Nigerian Democratic Democrats, praising its main sacrifice for recovery of civil governments.

Reflecting on the events of June 12, 1993, when Abiola won what was still considered the most free and fairest election in Nigeria before the results were canceled by the military, SDP described it as an important turning point.
“June 12, 1993, is a decisive moment in our journey to the Democratic government, and the date has become a eternal reference point on our journey towards national development,” said Aiyenigba.
“Today, as usual, we celebrate the deployment of the great sacrifice of the late Generalists from Joruba, whose fame, impact, and influence surpassed the elevated noble degree, when he became a national symbol of true services and torch carrier for national redemption,” the statement continued.
However, SDP expressed deep concern over Nigeria’s current situation, warning that Abiola’s dreams and sacrifices made by many pro-democracy heroes were connected by political classes that were cut off from the people.
“When we mark this extraordinary day, Nigeria sadly traffic jam by the leadership conspiracy and the country did not move towards achieving high dreams and great vision that Abiola had to Nigeria and people.
“Underestimated that our nation today is faced with development captured in all important fields.”
