Senate Rebukes Tunde Bakare for comments about emergency rules, suspension of natasha sen

Senate’s leadership has pushed back the recent statement made by Father Tunde Bakare, describing his statement about the role of the National Assembly in the Declaration of Emergency Regulations in the State of Rivers and the Suspension of the Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan as “misleading” and “corrosive”.

Bakare, a prominent cleric and former presidential candidate, on Sunday criticized the Senate acts, showed that they were involved in what he called the erosion of democratic values. “It is clear that our leaders who are said to be determined to turn Nigeria into the state of the mafia,” Bakare said.

He also accused the executive and legislative weapons of competing in “Institutional Imorality Olympiad.”

In response, Senator Yemi Adaramodu, Chair of the Senate Committee for the media and public affairs, issued a formal statement on Tuesday defending the integrity of the upper legislative room. He said while the Senate respected the rights of citizens to voice opinions about national issues, Bakare comments had “crossed the boundary” into an unfavorable attack.

“The attention of the senate has been withdrawn in this new public statement made by Pastor Tunde Bakare, which includes a sweeping generalization and underestimated comments aimed at the National Assembly Institute,” Adaramodu said. “Such rhetoric is at risk of eroding public trust in democratic institutions.”

Adaramodu recognizes the influence of Bakare as a religious leader and political voice, noting its history contributing to national discourse. However, he criticized Bakare’s latest comments as non -constructive and politically charged.

“While we recognize the input of his past in the national debate, this latest statement is unfortunately filled with claims to insult and baseless,” said Senator. “We view their corrosive criticism of the National Assembly as a biased and political ecumenical homily.”

The senate also highlighted the background of Bakare as a trained lawyer, showing that he must be aware of the constitutional restrictions about public comments, especially about things that are still in front of the court.

“He is well aware of the constitutional boundaries that guide public comments -especially about matters that are sub -justice,” Adaramodu said, emphasizing that the senate would not be involved in public discourse on legal issues that were under review.

Overcoming Bakare Suggestions that the National Assembly must adopt an aggressive attitude towards the executive, Adaramodu said that hope was performance and unproductive.

“Some people may try to describe the dynamics of hostility between the National Assembly and the executive as a sign of strong democracy. But true institutional maturity lies in the principle involvement, not a performance hostility,” he said.

Senator also rejected Bakare references for “the third-term agenda that is well-known” as an unfair and outdated benchmark, clarifying that the 10th National Assembly has not been approached with an incommensant proposal from the presidency.

“To throw Aspersi at all institutions based on personal frustration or ideological differences are not only unfair but also harming our collective democratic journey,” Adaramodu said.

Reflecting the Bakare relationship that developed with the previous assembly, Adaramodu declared the belief that history would justify the 10th senate acts.

“In time, with a review of nuances about the performance of the 10th National Assembly in the context of the challenges of this era, Father Bakare can praise us for our commitment to the people of Nigeria and our constitutional mandate,” he concluded.
