The Senate Committee for public accounts clarified that it has never accused the National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) of undue appropriation of ₦ 210 trillion, but rather stressed that ₦ 2 trillions are not accounted for in the registers of the company.

Nnpcl Gcece shuns again the Senate on Audit ₦ 210TRN Query

The president of the Committee, Senator Aliyu Wadada (Sdp, Nasarawa West), made this clarification during a session at the National Assembly, expressing concerns for the false media statements that followed the last meeting of the Committee with NNPCL officials.

“We never said that nnpcl stole ₦ 210 trillion,” said Wadada.

“What we said was that there are no trillion trillion and must provide justification for this.”

Tensions increased at the hearing while the Committee rejected the appearance of a delegation led by the financial director of NNPCL, Dapo Segun.

The president insisted on the fact that the CEO of the group, Mele Kyari Ojulari, must appear personally in front of the panel to provide answers regarding the missing funds and discrepancies in the company’s financial registers.

Wadada also criticized NNPCL for not having presented an adequate “net account”, stating that while the company reported 3 trillions of millions of expenses, the documents presented previously have reflected on figures up to 103 trillion.

He said that the Committee has requested clarity on the company’s property statements and financial relations.

The Committee also raised concerns about inconsistencies in the NNPCL documentation regarding cash calls.

According to reports, previous records showed withdrawals starting from 2015, while the company stated that the change entered into force in 2017.

The legislators of the Committee expressed frustration for the continuous absence of the GCIA. Senator Abdul Ningi (PDP, Bauchi Central) said that the boss Nnpcl repeatedly ignored the invitations of the Committee and was dealing with the legislator with contempt.

He rejected the statements according to which Ojulari’s participation in the Opec Seminary of Vienna justified his absence, claiming that his first responsibility was in Nigeria, not Opec.

“He should formally inform the committee of his journey well in advance,” said Ningi.

“Being a Gace does not exempt him from responsibility.

“The legislator has constitutional powers to request answers”.

Senator Adams Oshiomhole (APC, Edo North) echoed to the feeling, condemning the absence and warning of Ojilari that no official is above parliamentary control.

“Anyone who is too big to appear in front of the Committee should take the transfer from the country into consideration,” he said.

“We are constitutionally authorized to protect public funds. Nnpcl has a worrying history of fraud and bad financial management.”

With a weight also, Senator Kaka Shehu (APC, Borno Central) criticized the oil company for sending those who described as “junior officers” to face a committee in charge of a critical national duty. He urged the Committee to invoke his constitutional powers and enforce responsibility.

In response, the CFO Dapo Segun di Nnpcl apologized for the absence of the Gceton, but the committee argued that only the direct aspect of Ojilari would have satisfied his demand for transparency and clarity on the 2 trillion of ₦ 2 trillion.

The Committee postponed its session to July 15, with the expectations that the GCIA would participate.
