In a shocking revelation, Senator Sumaila Kawu, who represents Kano South, has revealed that his monthly income package exceeds N21 million, contradicting the latest statement of the Revenue Mobilization Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC).
RMAFC Chairman Mohammed Shehu claimed that each senator receives a total salary of N1.06 million and N21 million per month, which translates to N12.72 million per annum. However, Senator Kawu’s statement showed a significant difference, sparking controversy over the actual income of lawmakers.
In his interview with the British Broadcasting Hausa Service, Kawu admitted that his monthly salary was about N1 million, but his total income was N21 million, a considerable difference from the RMAFC figure.

“The amount of salary received per month is less than one million naira, if there is a deduction, the amount comes back to about six hundred thousand naira and a little as salary,” the senator said.
He further noted that the administrative expenses he received as a member of the Senate which included running the office was twenty one million naira per month.
“Because there is an increase, in the Senate, every senator is given twenty-one million naira every month as his office operating expenses,” he said.
He added that he earned a total of 22 million naira as a senator.
“I had no idea there was any money given to me as a senator,” he said.
The shocking revelations have raised questions about transparency and accountability in the management of state finances, with many demanding clarity on parliamentarians’ remuneration packages.
