The Honourable Minister for Sports Development, Senator John Owan Enoh, has issued a clarion call to the Nigeria U-20 Women’s National Team, the Falconets, as they depart for Bogota, Colombia for their final phase of preparations ahead of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.
With the tournament set to begin on August 31, the Falconets are ready to showcase their talent on the world stage once again.
Having earned their place in the prestigious tournament through a series of standout performances in the qualifiers, the Falconets, under the guidance of head coach Christopher Musa Danjuma, have their sights set on making history.
As two-time finalists in the competition, the team is determined to go all the way this time and bring the coveted trophy home to Nigeria.
In his message to the team, Senator Enoh expressed confidence in their ability to surpass the achievements of their predecessors. “Your predecessors have done a good job by reaching the final of the competition twice and the semi-finals once. Now it is time for you to take our country further by winning the trophy,” he said, emphasizing the nation’s confidence in the team’s potential.
“The Government and the people of this great country are with you and I trust that you will not let them down,” Senator Enoh added, underscoring the support and expectations of millions of Nigerians.
Following weeks of intensive training at the National Stadium in Abuja, the Falconets will now embark on a two-week training camp in Bogota. This final phase of preparation is crucial as the team hones its strategies and gains momentum ahead of the competition. Senator Enoh also praised the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) for its perfect planning of the team’s training camp in Colombia.
Drawn into Group D alongside formidable opponents such as Korea Republic, Germany and Venezuela, the Falconets are well aware of the challenges ahead. However, with determination and national pride, they aim to make a strong showing in the tournament and add another glorious chapter to Nigeria’s rich history in women’s football.
