A Martial General Court (GCM) sitting at the 82 Division headquarters, the Nigerian army, Enugu, sentenced a soldier to death, Pte Adamu Mohammed, hanged for killing his girlfriend.

The deputy director of acting 82 Division Army Public Relations, Lt.-Col. Jonah Unuakhalu, revealed it in a statement on Tuesday 29 April 2025.

Unuakhalu said the sentence was issued after a due consideration for the crime of murder.

The GCM, made up of 11 members, was inaugurated by the commander of the general official (Goc), 82 Division, Army Nigerian, Mag.-Gen. Olyemmi Olatoye, on February 18, 2025.

The President of the GCM, Brig.-Gen. SaDisu Buhari, while issuing the judgment on the murder case of Mohammed, said he was stated in the crime of his girlfriend’s murder.

Buhari said that it is an offense punishable pursuant to section 106 (a) of the law on the armed forces, ZIP A20 LFN 2004.

The judgment, which was unanimous, explained the president of the GCM, was arrived after a careful revision of the facts, career and the soldier’s service record and the compassionate motif for the mitigation presented by the soldier and his lawyer.

However, Buhari observed that in the interest of social decor and justice for the deceased, the law had to be applied to the maximum.

Having said that, the GCM said that the accused soldier “is sentenced to death by hanging for the charge of murder”.

Buhari also sentenced another soldier, Pte Abubakar Yusuf, 10 years of imprisonment for robbery in a shopping center in Enugu.

The President of the Court said that the panel declared Yusuf guilty of robbery, punishable pursuant to section 107 (1) (b) of the law on the armed forces, Cap A20 LFN 2004.

He added: “Although the Court carefully considered the mitigation request presented by the accused and by his lawyer for clemency, the law was applied to support social decor and protect the army reputation.

“The Court, with the present, condemns the accused soldier, 23na/85/12116 PTE Abubakar Yusuf, 10 years of imprisonment.”
