The organizers of the historic Road race of 10 km from Okpekpe International have acclaimed the appointment of Philip Shaibu, the former Vice Governor of the State of Edo as general director of the National Sports Institute, Nis.
The appointment, conducted by President Bola Tinubu, aimed to reposition the Institute to fulfill its mandate as a research and training Institute dedicated to developing sports professionals, improving sports performance and moving forward in sports science.
“The appointment of Comrade Philip Shaibu has arrived at the time when President Tinubu is reorganizing the sports sector and there is no better reform than focusing on an institution aimed at playing a crucial role in the development of sports talents, advancing in sports science and promoting physical aptitude,” said Zack Amyodu, the director of the Okpekpe career.

AMODU is confident that Comrade Shaibu will cause the positive changes that will transform the sports scene in Nigeria and convert the NIS into that great research and innovation center by conducting studies in sports medicine, biomechanics, nutrition and psychology to improve performance and prevent injuries.
“It will also ensure that there is adequate education and certification by offering courses for coaches, referees and sports management professionals to guarantee high standards in the industry,” added Amodu, who reveals that Shaibu has prepared for this role before and after becoming the Vice Governor of the State of Edo.
βComrade Shaibu was one of the pioneer members of the Edo state team who worked with Pamodzi Sports Marketing to ensure that Okpekpe International 10km Road’s career became the first road event to have its career course measure granted of a career in the west of 2015.
βAs Vice Governor, he was directly in charge of the Edo state government team that worked with the organizers to ensure that the event moved from a bronze label race in 2015 to Silver in 2018 and gold in 2022.

“We are all living witnesses of his time as well as the Vice Governor when he assured that the great insurance of Bendel became a family name again and delivered what is still spoken as one of the best national sports festivals ever organized in Nigeria,” Amodu added.
Amodu also acclaimed President Tinubu for fulfilling billing as a man who can identify talents and name them in critical positions to reform the various sectors of the Nigerian economy as part of his renewed project of hope.
“We thank our beloved president, Tinubu, for this event as Nigerian sports, especially the NIS, needs a cunning and goal administrator,” said Amodu.
