Vice -president Kashim Shettimo asked for a national recommendation for the reform of road safety, underlining innovation, collaboration and best global practices.
This is as the eighth annual series of lessons of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FSC) in the banquet hall of the presidential villa, Abuja on Wednesday said.
The vice -president, delivering the main address, observed that Nigeria is in a fundamental moment to redefine its road transport sector.
“Road safety management and emerging transport trends: global partnership and optimal performance”, said the series of lessons, is not simply academic but a vehicle for real solutions to the persistent challenges of road safety of the country.
“Road accidents are not only accidents, but they are emergencies of public health with terrible socio-economic consequences,” Shettimo observed.
“The government is committed to saving human lives and building a transport system that works for everyone”.
By highlighting the recent results of the Frsc, Shettimo praised the body for having placed Nigeria as a continental leader in road safety.
He underlined the hosting in Nigeria of permanent secretariats of both the organization for road safety of West Africa (Waso) and the lead agencies for Africa road safety (Arsla) as proof of international recognition.
Shettimo also reiterated the support of the Federal Government to the bill on the Frsc amendment, which recently approved his third reading to the House of Representatives.
“We will continue to support the efforts that promote the best global practices,” he said, exhorting the interested parties to pursue practical results of the lesson aimed at reducing the victims of road accidents of 50% before 2030.
The 2025 edition of the lesson marks a revitalized approach, with high -profile speakers and a moderate panel discussion by the former marshal and reformist of the body, Osita Chidoka, ofr.
The Panelists include the head of the defense staff, the Minister of Communications and the Digital Economy, the President of the Court of Appeal, the president of the Nigerian lawyer association and the deputy chancellor of the University of Abuja.
In addition, an important Keynote is scheduled is Mr. Saul Billingsley, executive director of the Fia Foundation, global leader in the defense of road safety.
Under the current leadership of the Marshal of the body Shehu Mohammed, MNI, the FRSC accelerated the digital transformation between its operations from the automated license systems to the forecast of crash through the analysis of data and the distribution of body cameras for field officers.
The officials say that these reforms have already translated into a faster emergency response, more intelligent traffic control and greater transparency of application.
Started over a decade ago, the Frsc annual conference series has become a main political for road safety forum.
The edition of this year, the observers say, reports a transition from “awareness” to driving action “.
“It is no longer just about asking the right questions,” said a spokesman for the Frsc.
“Now it’s about finding and implementing the right answers.”
While the series of lessons takes place, many hope that its results go beyond the theory in executive policy, transforming the roads of Nigeria and reducing the preventable deaths.
