Southampton knocks Arsenal out of the FA Cup

Southampton have booked a place in the FA Cup semi-finals after defeating Arsenal 2-1 in the quarter-finals at St. Mary’s Stadium on Saturday.

After losing the English League Cup final to City before the international break, Arsenal saw another possible trophy slip away.

Ross Stewart gave the Saints a commanding lead before half-time. Arsenal responded with 22 minutes left through substitute Viktor Gyokeres.

However, Shea Charles scored a precision goal in the 85th minute and the hosts held on for a place in the semi-finals alongside Chelsea, Manchester City and the winners of Sunday’s quarter-final between West Ham and Leeds.

A semi-final at Wembley awaits later this month for the Championship play-off hopefuls, who dream of replicating Lawrie McMenemy’s second-tier Saints who won the FA Cup in 1976.
