Southeast Representatives Demanding Resignation of Jamb Registrants, Cancellation of 2025 UTME

The Southeast Caucus in the House of Representatives has called for a direct resignation from the Clerk of the Joint Revenue and the Matriculation Board (Jamb), Professor Ishaq Oloyede, following what the group described as “Disaster Institutional Failure” in the implementation of 2025 Tertiary Unified (North) Tertiary Matriculation Exams.

In a statement issued on Monday and signed by Hon. Igariwey Enwo, Caucus reviled a frame for a large technical damage that affected nearly 380,000 candidates throughout the country – many of them have now been mandated to reclaim the examination. Parliamentary members emphasized that the five states in the southeast were affected.

“Last week, especially on May 14, 2025, Jamb registrants, Professor Ishaq Oloroed, openly admitted that because of the ‘technical problems’ in several exam centers for 2025 UTME, around 379,997 of 1.9 million candidates would be asked to run the exam,” said parliament.

“As caucus, we are very concerned, because the five southeast states that we represent are directly influenced by what is called ‘distortion score,'” they added.

The group said they initially refrained from reacting, hoping that Jamb would respond with adequate corrective actions. However, they expressed disappointment over what they described as a weak and chaotic response from the examination body.

“Over the past week, we have carried out restraints, hoping that Jamb will provide effective improvement steps to overcome the failure of this disaster institution – which has shocked public confidence and the trust of students and families throughout the country,” the statement said.

Caucus now demands the total cancellation of UTME 2025 and scheduling the new inspection period – maybe after completing the ongoing WAEC and Neco exams. In addition, they called for direct suspension of the Jamb officials responsible for infrastructure and digital agency logistics.

While recognizing the recruitment of the clerk of mistakes, parliament members insist that accountability must be supported by decisive actions, starting with the resignation of Oloyede.

“While we acknowledge the openness of Professor Oloroede in recognizing the failure of the jamb, we must expressly state that the improvement steps taken so far fall dramatically from the expectations of our constituents,” they said.

MPs also condemned the last minute scheduling of UTME, especially in the southeast, where they claimed students were given inadequate notification.

“Jamb’s Knee-Gerk, Fire-Brigade Approach has been anything but adequate. Students in the South East-change to whom are currently writing their waec exams –were gives less than 48 hours’ notice to appearance for the rescheduling utme. Inadequate, leading to low turnout. In some cases, the rescheduled utme clashed directly with ongoing waec papers, compounding distress for students and family, “the statement continued.

Caucus reminded Jamb of his constitutional responsibility to ensure the same access to education for all Nigerian children, emphasizing that the disabled administration of UTME this year violated the principle.

“We remind Nigerians that Jamb, as a government institution, are bound by the task to uphold fundamental obligations to their citizens. Section 18 (1) The 1999 Constitution states: ‘The government must direct its policies to ensure that there are equal and adequate educational opportunities at all levels,” Members of parliament emphasized.

“This new Judicial Decision now makes this rights that can be upheld for every Nigerian child. Unfortunately, for thousands of students in the southeast, defective and polluted behavior from UTME 2025 has effectively denied them correctly,” they concluded.
