Split deepens in Zamfara APC as new faction emerges

Nigeria’s ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Zamfara State is facing fresh turmoil following the emergence of another faction. The development comes amid ongoing infighting within the party’s state chapter.

The new faction is led by Honourable Aminu Sani Jaji, a member of parliament representing the Kaura Namoda/Birnin Magaji federal constituency. Jaji’s group held a press conference at the party secretariat on Thursday, announcing their decision to form a separate faction.

Jaji-led faction leader Aminu Abubakar blamed the state party executives for failing to foster unity among its members. He accused them of prioritizing personal interests over the welfare of the party, leading to divisions and the formation of multiple factions. Abubakar claimed his group had previously attempted to address the issue with leaders but was ignored.

He said, “Those who claim to be party leaders have failed to unite party members because of their personal interests.

“We have tried our best to draw their attention to the danger of a split in our great party, but unfortunately, they refuse to listen to us.

“If Honourable Sani Jaji is not a stakeholder of APC in Zamfara State, who else can we call a stakeholder?

“This is a planned attempt by some people calling themselves APC state leaders to eventually kill the party.

“Therefore, we have decided to open a new APC Secretariat in the state and we have appointed a Deputy Party Chairman and an Assistant Secretary to take over duties until after the election of new executive members.”

The latest developments deepen the crisis within the Zamfara APC. The party has been grappling with internal divisions for some time, and efforts to achieve reconciliation appear to have failed.

The reasons behind the split are not entirely clear from news reports, but Abubake’s comments suggest a power struggle within the party and potential dissatisfaction with the current leadership.

The emergence of new factions could have significant implications for the APC’s performance in future elections. A divided party would present a weaker front for the opposition and could lead to voter dissatisfaction.

It remains to be seen how the APC national leadership will respond to this latest crisis. Whether they can intervene and bring about reconciliation, or whether the Zamfara branch will split further, will likely determine the party’s future prospects in the state.
