Sultan Adekoya aims for 2028 Olympic gold after winning De-Lad boxing title

Sultan Adekoya, one of the most enterprising sportsmen at the recent eighth edition of the De-Lad’s Boxing Promotions competition in Lagos, has revealed that he wants to win a gold medal at the 2028 Olympics.

Having won more than 80 fights since he began boxing at the age of four, Adekoya believes he is mature enough to aspire to the highest level of amateur boxing.

He confessed that although his opponent tried hard in their last fight, it was easier than he thought, hence his verdict that there is no match for him at the moment.

The ambitious lad, who represented Borno State at the National Sports Festival, further revealed that he is targeting another victory at the upcoming Nigeria Boxing Championships to kick-start his countdown to the next Olympics.

Adekoya said: “I am an amateur boxer in the 54kg category. I have 85 wins, three draws and one loss.

“I’m happy to have won this fight, but I didn’t think I would have such a good performance. It was easy for me and I’m very grateful.”

“The fight was good. The opponent tried, but I won 3-0. Now I see that there is no one who can challenge me in my weight class.”

“Anyone who wants to challenge me can come. Let’s arrange the fight, let’s set a date. I’m ready for everyone. Bring anyone, let’s play gate, let’s fight.”

She then looked beyond her current situation and stressed that her biggest goal is to make Nigeria proud at the next Olympic Games, four years from now.

“I represented Borno State at the Festival Games where I was the first medallist. I am now going to compete for the national championship this year and I promise to win a gold medal for my state.

“After that, my goal is to win gold for Nigeria at the next Olympics. I will do my best to maintain my continuity and win gold for Nigeria. I also want to be the best in the world in my category,” Adekoya said.
