Newly confirmed interim coach of the Nigeria senior national team, Austine Eguavoen, has begun making plans to carry out his new role by building his support staff, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.

Eguavoen was yesterday confirmed by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) as the coach who will lead the Super Eagles into their AFCON 2025 qualifiers against Benin Republic and Rwanda on September 7 and 10 respectively.

His appointment as interim came after negotiations with Bruno Labbadia to take over as coach for both games failed. In practice, Eguavoen, in his role as technical director, comes in as a substitute when there is a void.

However, the decision for him to be interim coach was initially agreed before the NFF hastily announced Labbadia as coach. At the time, Eguavoen was already in Belgium to hold talks with two people he intends to work closely with in his role.

He was stunned to hear the news of Labbadia’s appointment and returned to Nigeria, only for the NFF to take another turn and ask him to take charge of the games, with camp set to resume on Monday.

We’ve learned that he’s now reached out to the duo he initially had in mind to join him in the dugout to prosecute both games, and is hopeful of gaining their approval.
