The interim coach of the Nigerian senior team, Austine Eguavoen, was on the verge of leaving his position as technical director of the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF), according to an ESPN report written by prominent Nigerian journalist Colin Udoh.
In his article on the reason why the NFF appointed Eguavoen as interim coach of the Nigerian senior men’s team and Justin Madugu as interim coach of the women’s team, Udoh said lack of funding forced the NFF to make the decision.
“Eguavoen is capable of doing the job,” an NFF official was quoted as saying by ESPN. “Right now there are no funds to pay a foreign coach, and he has done so well in the games he played that no one talks about a foreign coach again.
“The best thing we can do is let him continue because there is no guarantee that a new man will come along and do magic in the short time he will have. In fact, if he continues well with the team there will be no need to appoint any coach for now,” he stated.
Colin went further to reveal that Eguavoen almost left his position as technical director, the role that led to him taking the vacant managerial position after the NFF cut his salary in the summer.
“Despite this, the former defender is supposedly not paid more. “Sources within the NFF told ESPN that Eguavoen’s salaries as Technical Director were cut this summer as part of the federation’s belt-tightening measures,” he wrote.
“The move did not sit well with the former World Cup star, and he is said to have considered resigning from his position, before he was convinced to stay,” he concluded.
