Suspected herdsmen kill 18, kidnap three in Benue community

Gunmen suspected to be herdsmen killed 18 people in Mbache District, Katsina-Ala local government area, Benue State on Friday.

The chairman of the caretaker committee in Katsina-Ala LGA, Mr. Justine Shaku, told reporters on Saturday that a man and his two children were also abducted during the attack.

Shaku said he received an emergency call at 11 p.m. Friday, saying armed men were going from house to house and forcing people to follow them.

He said: “I immediately alerted military officers in Tor Donga but before they could reach Mbache district where the incident took place, the gunmen had killed 18 people and escaped with three others.

“Last night I was told the number was 17, but today 18 bodies have been confirmed dead.

“They all gathered in one place and were killed.

“This morning, I, the Benue State House of Assembly members and the legislative adviser held a meeting and communicated the development to the Commissioner of Police.

“He is on his way. Since he is coming, we asked the villagers to wait and allow him to join us in Katsina-Ala town before we visit the scene.

“Yes, several people were kidnapped, a man and his two children were kidnapped.

“In the last few days, apart from what happened yesterday, we have seen a number of pockets of kidnappings.

“Kidnappings have also resurfaced in the area.”
