The AKK gas pipeline is almost completed according to the target of Q1 2025

The Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano (AKK) gas pipeline project received positive news from the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).

During a visit to the project site with ministers on Friday, NNPC Group Chief Executive Officer Mele Kyari announced that the project is on track for completion in the first quarter of 2025.

According to a statement signed by the Chief Corporate Communications Officer
NNPC Limited, Olufemi Soneye, available on his X account on Friday, Kyari explained that most of the work has been completed.

“Without promising too much, we guarantee that this project will be completed on schedule. Our mission is to try to make it happen by December this year. However, we are confident that this project will be completed in the first quarter of 2025,” Kyari told the three visiting Ministers.

The three ministers who visited the Project Site were: Minister of Finance/Coordinating Minister for the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun; Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mr. Mohammed Idris, and Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo.

The 614-kilometer pipeline, designed to carry natural gas from production centers in the south to major cities in northern Nigeria, has experienced previous delays.

The initial target for completion was set at 2023. However, Kyari stressed that significant progress had been achieved and put it back on schedule within the revised timeframe.

The AKK pipeline is an important piece of infrastructure that has the potential to have a significant impact on the Nigerian economy. By providing a reliable gas supply for power plants in the north, this could increase electricity output by around 3.6 gigawatts.

This increase in power generation could have a major impact, stimulating economic activity and development throughout the region. In addition, the pipeline is expected to open up opportunities for gas-based industries to develop along the pipeline, creating jobs and further diversifying the Nigerian economy.

Although Kyari’s comments paint a promising picture, Nigeria has a history of infrastructure project delays. Some factors, including unforeseen logistical challenges or budget constraints, may still delay the completion date.

Nonetheless, AKK’s plans appear to be making great progress, and stakeholders will continue to monitor progress in the coming months to see whether the ambitious targets for the first quarter of 2025 can be achieved.
