The army of Burkina Faso says that he foiled the plot of the “major” coup d’état

On Monday the Minister of Security Mahamadou Sana announced the misfortune of the coup on television

The military government of Burkina Faso said that he foiled a “big conspiracy” to overthrow the leader of the council of Capt Ibrahim Traoré, with the army claiming that the plotters were located in the nearby Ivory Coast.

The security minister Mahamadou Sana said that the coup d’etat attempt was led by the current and former soldiers who work with “terrorist leaders”.

The intention was to attack the presidential palace last week, he added.

The aim of the plan was to “sow total chaos and position the country under the supervision of an international organization,” Sana said to State Television on Monday.

It is the last of several statements about attempts to remove the leader of the junta that seized power in 2022 among the growing militant attacks.

Burkina Faso, like his neighbors of Sahel, fought armed jihadist groups, with about 40% of the country under their control.

Despite the promises of the Military Government of Capt Traoré to improve security and even seek new security partnerships with Russia, the situation remains terrible with frequent attacks by the insurgents.

In this last attempt at the coup, which happened last week, but whose details have just been released, Sana said that the plotters attempted to use the religious and traditional leaders of Burkinabe to sway the army officers in supporting the plan.

“The maneuver was to culminate, according to the terrorist plotter plan, on Wednesday 16 April 2025 in an assault on the presidency of (Burkina) Faso by a group of soldiers recruited by the enemies of the nation,” he said.

“The brains outside the country are all found on the Ivorio coast,” he added, appointing two former army officers in particular, considered behind the plot.

He said that “sensitive information was sent to” terrorists “to increase attacks on the military and civilians and” incite a revolt against the authorities “.

Last week, several soldiers, including two officers, were arrested for planning to “destabilize” the government, said security sources to the AFP news agency.

The Ivorian authorities have not yet commented on the statements that hosted the plotters, but Burkinabe’s junta has often blamed his southern neighbor of supporting his opponents in exile.

The last statement comes months after Ouagadougou said that he contrasted another “destabilization” conspiracy against the junta last November.

The Burkina Faso, together with two other military-music and Niger states, has detached himself from the regional block of West Africa, Ecowas, to form a new alliance.

Instead, they cut ties with the former colonial power France and allies with Russia.
