The Benue Council recommends the suspension of the Chair of the Subeb for alleged violations

The Benue State Council Council on Tuesday asked Governor Hyacinth Alia to suspend the Chairperson of the Universal State Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Dr. Grace Adagba, for six months due to alleged violations.

Parliamentary members, who made a decision after a motion transferred by the head of the whip, Mr. Bemdoo Ipusu, during the plenary in Makurdi, asked the chairman to stay away from all matters relating to the council.

They said the suspension would give a panel of ability to supervise the council.

Ipusu said that the Parliament, during the plenary on July 21, negotiated on a motion entitled: “The DPR Movement to Start Verification of Contracts throughout the State.”

He said: “After a strong debate, the DPR decided to form the Ad Hoc Committee of seven people to ensure the true status of the project completed and sustainable which was mashed by the Government of Alia from the beginning until now and reported back to the DPR within four weeks.

“The Ad Hoc Committee has given several invitations to the executive chairman of the Subeb; He, however, refused to appear before the committee without a satisfying explanation.

“In one of his letters, he clearly stated that the Parliament did not have the right to investigate contracts from the council.

“Therefore, it becomes very clear that he deliberately hampered the DPR from carrying out the mandate of his constitutional supervision.”

He stressed that the chairman remained in the office while the committee assigned his assignment to create conflicts of interest, damage public trust, or endanger the investigation.

MPs who represent South Makurdi, Mr. Douglas Akya, who supported the motion, condemned the lack of council cooperation with the DPR under the chairman.
