The chief coach of the national senior team of Nigeria Eric Chelle says that the best tactics does not necessarily mean that games all the time, reports Owngoalnigeria.com.
Chelle, who will return to the hot seat in September, when the Super Eagles play in the World Cup qualifications against Rwanda and South Africa, respectively, made it known in an interview with Onzemondial.
He explained that some coaches vary their system in relation to opponents, and used the Pep Guardiola and José Mourinho duo system to properly explain their point.
“Some coaches adapt their tactics in relation to the opponent, they seek to counteract the opponent. A little like what the great coach who was Mourinho did. Therefore, his ideal was to find the weaknesses of the opponent and counteract the opponent. And then you have Type Guardiola-Type coaches who wish to impose their game style. Pressing to put the opponents to put the opponents in difficulty.
“I position myself between Guardiola and the Red Bull project in transition. I don’t want to counteract the opponent, I want to impose my game and philosophy,” he said.
Speaking more, he explained why the best tactics do not necessarily win games all the time, citing the game between Manchester United and Lyon in the Europa League as a case study.
“No, not necessarily. In recent weeks, we have seen many games on television, and we realize that the games are not played in tactics. The games are played mentally and especially the great games. For example, the match between Manchester United and Lyon, we go from 2-0 to 2-2 and then 2-4. And finally, it is not tactical, it is mental, it is small details, it is a meter of the placement.
“Italian -style pure tactics of 20 or 30 years ago no longer exist. Today, football goes very, very fast. And two meters are no longer played. Today, one meter is played, or even 50 centimeters. The mind makes a difference. During the big games, this is what you will propose in terms of movement, game project, acting, mental preparation and interactions between players that will give you results.
“The tactics are an eternal restart. Before, 4-4-2 was the favorite scheme, then there was 3-5-2, then 4-3-3. It changes totally, then return. We have already seen everything.”
