The copyright commission arrested 4 school owners on suspicion of book piracy

The Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC) has arrested the owners of four private schools in Rivers State for alleged book piracy.

NCC Director, Port Harcourt Directorate, Mr. Abdul Babatunde, disclosed this to journalists shortly after the anti-hijacking operation in the state capital on Friday.

The training took place at GRA, Rumuibekwe; Rumukurusi, and the East-West Road axis in the metropolitan city of Port Harcourt.

Babatunde said suspected pirated books worth N2.5 million were confiscated by the commission during the operation.

He added that the raid was carried out to check the illegal activities of the school owner because it had an impact on the book trade.

The director said: “The school owners, whose schools were visited, are currently undergoing investigation and will be charged to court if the commission can provide prima facie evidence against them.”

Babatunde vowed that there would be no safe haven for pirated book dealers under his watch.

He said: “This operation is part of the commission’s mandate to protect and promote the rights of authors and other investors in the copyright ecosystem.

“The Director General of NCC, Dr. John Asien, does not tolerate piracy and violations of copyright laws.”

Babatunde, therefore, warned school owners, booksellers, printers and importers of pirated books to stop such criminal acts.
