The court adjourned Emefiele’s procurement fraud trial until October 21

Justice Hamza Muazu of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court, Abuja, on Tuesday adjourned the trial of former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor, Godwin Emefiele, over alleged procurement fraud to October 21.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) charged Emefiele with 20 counts of procurement fraud.

The commission accused the former CBN governor of criminal breach of trust, forgery, conspiracy to obtain money under false pretenses, and obtaining money under false pretenses during his tenure.

Specifically, the EFCC accused Emefiele of falsifying a document entitled: Re: Presidential Instructions on Foreign Election Observer Missions dated 26 January 2023, with Ref No. SGF.43/L.01/201 and is said to be from the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (AGF).

He is also accused of using his position to provide unfair and corrupt advantages to two companies – April 1616 Nigeria Limited and Architekon Nigeria Limited.

The judge adjourned the trial until October 21 after hearing the statement of the 9th prosecution witness (PW9).

He also postponed the hearing on Emefiele’s application to have her passport released until July 8 so she can travel abroad for medical treatment.
