The court rejected the N1B lawsuit against Buhari, Emefiele for the rearrangement of Naira

The Federal High Court in Abuja has rejected the N1 billion lawsuit filed against former President Muhammadu Buhari and former Governor of the Central Bank Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, regarding the controversial Naira 2023 re -design policy.

The lawsuit, filed by the legal practitioner Uthman Isa Tochukwu, accused that the policy caused great difficulties and violated its fundamental rights to freedom of movement and personal dignity.

TOCHUKWU argues that Buhari’s government policy greatly limits its movements and provides funds in two commercial banks that cannot be accessed between January and March 2023.

He searched for N1 billion in damage as compensation for alleged violations of his rights, along with permanent orders to prevent the Federal government from attracting the old N200, N500 and N1000 denominations. In addition, he asked for a court order to force the defendants to issue public apologies in two major national newspapers.

However, during the court process on Monday, Judge Inyang Ekwo rejected the case due to the lack of prosecution of the plaintiff who was diligent.

The court concluded that the plaintiff had left this case, quoting his recurrent absence and a failure to give any legal representative or any explanation to be absent.

Mr. Chikelue Amasiani, legal counsel for the 3rd and 4th defendants (Emefiele and CBN), told the court that both the plaintiff and lawyer did not show a commitment to pursue the case since his submission in 2023.

AMASIANI then asked the court to end the process further, the motion given by Judge Ekwo.
