The fifth National Table Tennis Championship Michael and Felicia Alabi Memorial Memorial will crown new champions on Friday, May 2, after the departure of the defense champions Jamiu Ayanwale and Sukurat Aiyelabgan. The five -day tournament finals are held in NATO Ayegbaju, Osun state.
Sanctioned by the Nigeria Table Tennis Federation (NTTF) and organized by the OSun State Table Tennis Association, the Tournament has an ₦ 11.5 million award. Lagos players, Ogun, Oyo, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, Taraba, Nasarawa, Abia, Adamawa, Anambra, Delta, Edo, Kwara, Kogi, Ekiti, Katsina, Niger, Zamfara and the host state, Osun, compete for the honor in several events.
Clubs such as Aruna Sports Club, Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC), and Nigeria’s police force also compete for the highest honors in the National Ranking Championship.
In a great discomfort, Matthew Fabunmi de Kwara defeated the 2024 Jamiu Ayanwale de Rivers champion in the quarterfinals of the male singles with a 3-1 victory (11-9, 8-11, 11-8, 11-8). The number one seed Abdulbasit Abdulfatai continued its dominant career, ensuring a 4-1 victory over Abdulraheem Sanni de Edo in the semifinals. Fabunmi also triumphed over Joshua Oladiran de Ondo 4-1, establishing an All-Kwara final.
In the female singles, veteran Halimat Hussein de Oyo used his experience to overcome the 2024 champion Sukurat Aiyelabgan. Hussein then defeated the national champion Bose Odusanya de Lagos 4-3 to reach the final, where he will face Hope Uudoka of Cross River. UDOKA had a soft path to the final, surpassing Aishat Ribu de Oyo 4-1 in the semifinals.
In the event for male singles, class 1-5, Paris 2024, the bronze medalist of the Paralympics, Isau Ogunkunle of Ogun, emerged as a champion. In Class 6-10, Abiola Adesope claimed the title by defeating the Bronze medalist of the Paralympics of Tokyo 2020, Olufemi Alabi.
