“Go to the ant, lazy; observes his ways and becomes wise.” Proverbs 6: 6.
A talent of Nigerian musician, Adekunle Gold, in one of his popular songs entitled, encouraged people to work hard. This is in harmony with what the Word of God, the Bible, recommends in Ecclesiaste chapter 9, verse 10, where she says: whatever your hand finds you do, do with all your power “
Working is paid or unpaid, it is good for our health and well -being. It contributes to our happiness, it helps us to build trust and self -esteem and can reward us financially. Work is an essential tool through which people can achieve their goals, thrive and live a happy and significant life.
Work has different dimensions, such as work to earn a living and working to develop one’s talent and potential. For example, a girl in one of the corners of the world who goes to kindergarten and learn to count, draw or write, works. Likewise, an adult, who goes to his work every day and is paid for this, also works. Therefore, on the basis of the age, circumstances, needs and desires of individuals, work or work, it assumes different forms.
Work is a virtue and a necessity, which requires the use of time and energy. Man has control of his time and energy when he works voluntarily and constructively. The Bible underlines the importance of work when he says, among other things, in 2 fabrics, chapter 3, verses from 10 to 12 that if someone does not want to work, nor lets him eat. This writing condemns laziness. We must work to earn to live and provide for our families. The work provides the individual with the ability to be independent, thrive, develop and, above all, to find meaning in life.
However, there are many problems that seriously affect work and workers in Nigeria today. These include unemployment, poor remuneration/wages, poor work environment and conditions and casualization of workers, among others. Many people experience poverty and unemployment without fault. Many who are able to work, willing to work hard and even the active job of work, are not yet able to find work that are unemployed!
Unemployment and poverty are two of the main problems that currently afflict the economy of Nigeria and its society. However, despite the high unemployment rate and poverty, the situation is not necessarily hopeless. People can still find a significant job in which to commit themselves, even if it can be small. And, like another Nigerian musician talent, Sonnie Smyth, he sang in his music video entitled: No Wahala: No Wahala, it’s better, after today, I’m going to see tomorrow! “You can download and watch this music video, No Wahala, performed by Sonnie Smyth and directed by Achor Yusuf, on YouTube.
If you are unemployed or cannot find a job in your area of particular interest, it is wise to consider the search for a job in other areas, even if the work is considered humble by the standards of some people. Do not allow the false pride to make you look down a job as under your dignity. Any legitimate service that can benefit from others and that people are willing to pay, can be considered an alternative job opportunity when the works are scarce.
People differ in terms of many characteristics such as intelligence, talents, academic levels, etc. Therefore, depending on the human potential and the specific work environment, the work can be equally advantageous for the person or humiliating. For example, prostitution, gambling and drug tax constitute a job, since you get a sort of remuneration for the service provided. But the money you get from this type of work become useless, since it does not contribute not to the human perspective or the basis of a significant life. The work should be the key to human and flourishing survival and not for the degradation of the individual and his moral values.
On the other hand, no matter how honest, the work from Dawn to sunset does not even make you prosper your life. All the work and no game makes Jack a boring guy, goes to the popular saying. Aurists of work, people whose only purpose in life is work, they will prifigel the enjoyment to engage in other activities. Productive work is not an end, but a means to flourish. If you pursue productive work on the exclusion of everything else in one’s life, so that it becomes the only purpose in life, this will undermine the flourishing ones. On the other hand, those who maintain their balanced life will probably enjoy their work even more.
So, whether your work is mostly mental, mostly physical or somewhere in the middle, recognize that there is dignity in labor! Hard work helps us take care of our material needs. In addition, it contributes to self -respect, after all, hard work is so difficult. When we regulate ourselves to stick to our work even if it seems boring or difficult, we can have the satisfaction of knowing that we have held at a high standard. We won the victory over the inclination to take the way out. In this sense, work brings an intense feeling of satisfaction.
God wants us to enjoy the fruit or reward of our hard work. His word, the Bible says: there is nothing better for a man than to eat and drink and find fun in his hard work. This too, I understood, is from the hand of the true God. Ecclesiaste 2:24.
