The Edo faction of the PDP demanded Shaibu’s resignation amidst open support for the APC

A faction of the Edo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), on Monday, demanded the immediate resignation of former Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu, following his surprise endorsement of the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Senator Monday Okpebholo, in the Democratic Party. upcoming gubernatorial election.

Shaibu’s shocking move has sparked outrage among the PDP, with party leaders accusing him of treason and anti-party activities.

The Deputy Director General of media of the PDP Edo Governorship Campaign Council, Pastor Olu Martin in a statement on Monday, described Shaibu’s reasons for supporting the APC candidate as baseless.

“Because the candidate did not grow up in Edo, it does not make him a foreigner in his own country.

“I think Shaibu would tell us that the candidate he wants to support has the capacity, intelligence, talent to excel and is intelligent, which are the characteristics of a great leader,” Martin said.

Martin added that it was against Shaibu who remained in the PDP and opposed the party’s candidate.

“The honorable thing he should do is to quit the PDP like others and support the APC candidate. “The arguments are the arguments of weak people,” he said.

These developments further deepen divisions in the Edo State political landscape, as the PDP struggles to maintain unity ahead of this crucial election. Shaibu’s defection also raised questions about his political integrity and loyalties, given his previous role as a senior member of the PDP.

Political analysts see Shaibu’s move as a strategic play to align himself with the APC’s political dominance in the state, despite his previous clashes with Governor Godwin Obaseki. The move also fueled speculation regarding potential political appointments or incentives offered to Shaibu by the APC.

Calls from the Edo PDP Party for Shaibu to resign have added fuel to the political fire, and sparked fierce fighting ahead of the election. As this drama unfolds, one thing is clear: the political landscape in Edo State has been permanently shaken, and the consequences of Shaibu’s defection will be closely watched by political observers across the country.
