The EFCC charged a person for tearing an official letter

The Gombe Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) recently charged Usman Mallam for allegedly shredding official papers of the EFCC Investigative Activities and obstructing its investigations.

He was arraigned before Justice TG Ringim of the Federal High Court sitting in Gombe, Gombe State.

Mallam, a desk officer in charge of responding to official correspondence at the office of the Secretary to the State Government, (SSG) Gombe State, was charged with one count of willfully obstructing investigative activities and shredding official documents of the EFCC.

The sole charge against Mallam reads “that you, Usman Mallam on or about February 26, 2024 at Gombe, Gombe State within the jurisdiction of this honorable court while officers of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC were carrying out investigative activities. involving alleged economic and financial crimes, intentionally obstructing said investigation by tearing up official letters of EFCC investigative activities dated 1 January 2024 and 21 February 2024 respectively” and thereby committing an offense contrary to Article 38 (1) and punishable under Article 38 (2) (a) and (b) Law on the Establishment of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission”.

When arraigned, the defendant pleaded not guilty to one charge, so prosecutor AM Labaran said, “My Lord, the defendant has submitted himself to trial, so we will ask for a trial date.”

However, the defendant’s attorney SS Usman said, “My Lord, we have submitted a bail application dated July 11 2024, we ask the court to exercise its discretion and grant bail to the defendant”

Magistrate Ringim then granted the defendant bail in the sum of N10 million and one surety in a similar sum. The guarantor is a director in a government agency or private company with capital of not less than N10 million.

In addition to these requirements, the court clerk must verify the guarantor’s identity and both the guarantor and defendant must submit two passport photos to the court.

Judge Ringim remanded the accused to Gombe State Correctional Institution pending fulfillment of bail conditions and adjourned the case to July 9, 2024 for trial.
