The Ebonyi State Police Command has confirmed the death of former Ebonyi Deputy Governor, father of Mr Kelechi Igwe, Chief Francis Igwe, who was kidnapped in his kidnappers’ hideout.
This is contained in a statement issued to journalists in Abakaliki on Friday by the Command Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Joshua Ukandu.
Ukandu explained that the victim, Igwe, died on March 2 before the Nigerian Police Force rescue team could arrive at the scene.
The father of the former deputy governor was kidnapped on March 1 while on his way to church in Ndufu-Alike community, Ikwo Local Government Area (LGA) of Ebonyi.
The Command’s PPRO said police officers neutralized one and arrested nine suspects in connection with the crime.
βFollowing the abduction of Chief Igwe on March 1, operatives of the Ebonyi Command immediately launched intensive operations to rescue the victim.
βThrough the deployment of technical and intelligence resources, officers arrested two suspects identified as members of the kidnapping syndicate.
βDuring interrogation, the suspects confessed that the victim was killed on March 2.
βThe suspects also volunteered to lead officers to their hideout and assist in the recovery of the victim’s remains.
βHowever, as soon as they approached the hideout, other members of the gang opened fire on the officers.
βThe officers responded with superior firepower, which overwhelmed the gang.
“During the clash, one of the thugs was neutralized, while the others fled. Subsequently, seven other suspects were arrested from whom a locally made pistol was recovered.
βThe remains of the victim were later recovered and deposited at the mortuary for autopsy.
“The suspects are currently in police custody and efforts are underway to arrest the absconding gang members. They will be arraigned in court upon completion of investigations,” PPRO explained.
