Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa
The Federal Government has launched the final phase of the negotiations with the union of the academic staff of universities (Asuu) and other unions of tertiary education on a planned union action.
This was revealed by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, during a meeting with the technical working group on the Asuu service conditions in Abuja on Wednesday 8 October 2025.
Alausa expressed optimism that the suspended issues will soon be resolved to prevent further trade union actions.
Alausa said that the group is finalizing a counter-offer to be presented to the unions through the negotiating committee for the tertiary institutions of the Federal Government General Allied.
The minister said that the committee’s work is in line with the directive of President Bola Tinubu according to which all efforts must be made to keep Nigerian students at school and avoid interruptions of the academic calendar.
“If everything is fine by the end of today, or at the latest tomorrow, the Committee for the negotiations provided for the tertiary institutions of the Federal Government General Allied will receive the counter -proposal to the Asuu,” he said.
The Asuu mobilizes members for a strike since FG cannot meet requests
Alausa added that about 80% of the unions’s requests were similar among the tertiary institutions, while the remaining 20% reflected specific concerns in the sector.
He said that the Committee, inaugurated at the beginning of the week, started intense resolutions to accelerate the agreement and the implementation times.
The minister said that the Tinubu administration made significant progress with the payment of the academic allowance earned of 50 billion dollars issued by the president.
Alausa said: “In addition, 150 billion dollars have been included in the 2025 budget for the evaluation of needs, and this will be released in three tranches, with the first 50 billion dollars ready.
“The teachers deserve to be paid so much, as well as our academic and non -academic staff, but then we cannot give you everything you want at the same time.
“This government is doing other things to improve the well -being of their own (teachers). At this point, we have addressed many of the issues we have raised.”
Alausa added that the arrears in promotions and other outstanding allowances, including the premiums for teaching and salaries, have been faced, while all the remaining areas will be paid by 2026.
