In a bid to resolve the impasse over a proposed new minimum wage, governors in Nigeria’s 36 states have scheduled emergency meetings for Wednesday.
This development comes after the Federal Executive Council’s (FEC) decision to withdraw the minimum wage memo on Tuesday.
Governors had previously rejected the federal government’s proposed minimum wage of N62,000, citing concerns that some states would need to borrow funds to pay salaries if that amount was implemented. Organized labor, on the other hand, remains steadfast in its demand for a minimum wage of N250,000.
According to the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, the FEC cannot take a decision on the minimum wage issue due to its complexity, which involves local governments, states, the federal government and the organized private sector.
However, the Acting Director of Media and Public Affairs of the Nigerian Governors Forum (NGF) Halima Ahmed, confirmed that the governors will meet on Wednesday at 7pm in Abuja to discuss the issue.

The emergency meeting was aimed at finding a solution to the deadlock that has persisted since the meeting of the tripartite committee on the new national minimum wage. The committee had proposed N62,000, while the unions had asked for N250,000.
President Bola Tinubu has also announced plans to consult with 36 state governors and members of the organized private sector to arrive at a new national minimum wage figure.
The move is seen as an effort to ensure a consensus-based approach in determining the new minimum wage, which will have far-reaching implications for workers, employers and the economy as a whole.
Wednesday’s meeting is expected to be an important step in resolving the minimum wage impasse, as governors seek to find a mutually acceptable solution that balances the needs of workers, employers and the government.
