The President/CEO of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Brig.- Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (RETD), asked for a collective effort from families, traditional sovereigns and the leading of the community to combat the “triple threat” of abuse of substances, cultural and bandit among the young Nigerian.
Speaking during the weekend in a seminar in Ode Ijebu, in the state of Ogun, Marwa said that these social vices are “connected in a complex way” and threaten the very fabric of society.
He mentioned a United Nations Office on the projection of drugs and crime (UNODC) that drug consumption should increase by 40% in Africa, observing that Nigeria already has one of the highest prevalences of the consumption of drugs in the world.
However, Marwa has ensured that the trend can be reversed through “collective responsibility”.
He urged his parents, religious institutions and community leaders to get up with a single voice against these vices and to invest in the development of young people by creating education and acquisition of skills.
Marwa has also provided an update on the efforts under the NDLEA, details significant results in the last 54 months, which include: the arrest of 67,345 traffickers and 95 barons. Guarantee the terms of the prison for 12,415 transgressors. Seize over 11.2 million kilograms of illegal drugs. Destroying 1,572 hectares of cannabis farms, treating and rehabilitating 27,187 drug addicts.
The head of Ndlea stressed that the fight against drug abuse requires a strong community partnership. He urged the communities to “speak, to report suspicious activities and to support our defense units”.
In a correlated commitment, Marwa used his visit to the ode Ijebu to make a visit to the family of the deceased family of Ijebu Land, Oba Sikiru Adeetona.
