The government of the state of Kwara confirmed the death of all 37 passengers aboard a boat that turned upside down on Thursday evening in the Gbajibo river.
The victims, mostly traders, were traveling from the state of the Niger to Kwara when the ship, according to reports, hit an object and lost his balance.
According to Rafiu Ajakaye, the chief secretary of the governor of the State of Kwara, the bodies recovered had been placed at rest in the state of the Niger.
βThe accident occurred on Thursday evening while the merchants who came to the market in Gbajigbo Mudi were returning home.
βIt happened in the state of the Niger and all the bodies were buried there.
“That’s why we didn’t make a first statement,” said Ajakaye.
The accident adds to a worrying scheme of tragedies on the Gbajibo river.
Just seven months ago, a separate boat accident in the same position caused over 200 lives.
According to reports, that accident was due to overload and high levels of water.
Local sources said that the latest accident also involved overload.
Mahmoud Gbajibo, a former president of the local government, said that the boat transported merchants who had just left the market to Gbajigbo Mudi when he turned upside down around 18:00 on Thursday.
“So far, thirty -seven bodies have been recovered and many others have been saved,” he said.
The repeated accidents on the GBAJIBO river have raised concerns about the lack of effective supervision and safety measures of relevant agencies, pushing requests for urgent interventions to prevent future tragedies.
