The Lagos government clarifies the Styrofoam Prohibition not Political

The state government of Lagos on Thursday defended its decision to prohibit the use of disposable styrofoams in the state.

The state government banned the use of Styrofoam and other disposable plastic in January 2024 after years of advocacy from environmental experts, civil society groups, and public health stakeholders.

In a verified postal post, Commissioner of State for the environment and water resources, Tokunbo Wahab, said the decision was rooted in public health, environmental sustainability, and scientific evidence and not for political comfort.

He noted that the move was initially unpopular after pulling resistance from a particular place.

The commissioner said the data relied on the government was clear and undeniable, adding that styrofoam clogged the drainage system, polluting the water body, entered the food chain, and pose a significant risk for human and environmental health.

Wahab wrote: “Our decision to prohibit unpopular styrofoam, but it is necessary. We stand on an undeniable research: this material clogs flowing, polluting our water, and poisoning our food chain.

“That’s not politics – it’s public health.”

He thanked the lagos for adapting to direction and embracing environmentally friendly alternatives.

“For every lagosian who adapts: Thank you. You have helped reduce flooding and protect the future of our children,” added the Commissioner.
